The ACT Matrix

An Reflective Activity to Take a New Perspective

The ACT Matrix is one of the major perspective-taking exercises of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, next to the Choice Point.

While the ACT Matrix is focused on moving towards and away from aversive experiences and pain, the Choice Point is about moving towards and away from values for a rich and meaningful life. Hence, both tools have a towards and away polarity, however the ACT Matrix also makes an explicit distinction between the observable physical world and the private inner world.

The ACT Matrix requires some preparation and care. Hence, I’d recommend it as a reflection activity to complement counseling.
